Sitges renews its Smart Tourism Destination certification

This honour reaffirms its commitment to a sustainable tourism model based on continuous improvement.

The city earned its renewal after successfully completing the Smart Tourism Destination (DTI) review, an exhaustive analysis assessing the destination’s progress since 2022 based on 97 requirements and 261 indicators. The report covers the destination’s current situation and the strategic recommendations that will guide future tourism management improvements.

This new recognition, valid for two years, reinforces Sitges City Council’s commitment, through its Councillor’s Office for Tourism, to a tourism model that is aligned with the five cornerstones of the DTI model: governance, sustainability, technology, innovation and accessibility. “Our annual action plan at Councillor’s Office is based on a cross-cutting integration of these values in planning and implementing municipal tourism policies,” says the city councillor for tourism, Xavier Ripoll.

Sitges is also working on various DTI-aligned initiatives as part of its Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan (PSTD), funded by the EU’S Next Generation scheme. The plan includes strategic projects that will be implemented by 30 June 2026 and that are aligned with the DTI model. Current initiatives, including a decarbonisation project for local tourism-sector businesses, accessibility trainings and a tourism intelligence system, will also play a key role in supporting Sitges’s future growth as a tourist destination.

Smart Tourism Destination programme

Sitges has been part of the Network of Smart Tourism Destinations since February 2022, reflecting its strong commitment to the transformation of tourism and to collaboration between public institutions, the private sector and the general public. The city has been able to implement the DTI methodology thanks to teamwork across all municipal departments and the involvement of the local tourism sector, reinforcing Sitges as a leading destination for innovative, sustainable management.

Managed by SEGITTUR, the DTI Programme is an initiative created by the Spanish Secretariat of State for Tourism that seeks to boost the competitiveness of destinations, enhance residents’ quality of life and offer tourists more integrated, intelligent and sustainable experiences.
