Elegies is a song cycle in response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York. Over the course of six months, he has composed eighteen diverse musical moments in memory of his friends and family. Three of the songs deal with the death of his mother Barbara Finn, several with the death of his friends from AIDS, and the last group of songs deals with the fall of the "World Trade Center" and its emotional aftermath.

The director has stated on several occasions that "Elegies" is his greatest success as a composer and lyricist.
