The information and maximum capacity control service for Sitges' beaches gets underway this Thursday

A total of 30 people hired by the Sitges Town Council will be in charge of controlling the maximum capacity of the beaches this summer and informing bathers and visitors about the safety measures established due to the pandemic.

The information agents will start working as of June 26th, after receiving a training session this Thursday, and will continue throughout the entire summer season, until September 24th when their service will end. The Sitges Town Council has implemented this measure with the aim of preventing overcrowding during the months of July and August and avoiding possible Covid-19 contagion.

The mayor of Sitges and councilwoman for Tourism, Aurora Carbonell, explained that “although the state of alarm has ended, we mustn’t forget that the pandemic is not over, and we must be very aware of this during our activities this summer, especially on the beaches, where large numbers of people usually gather”. The Mayor pointed out, moreover, that "it is necessary for citizens to take joint responsibility for the situation and to respect all security measures".

The Human Resources and Organization Councilwoman, Carme Almirall, remarked that “here at the Sitges Town Council we have made an important effort to undertake this whole prevention operation in order, on the one hand, to provide detailed information to all beach users so that they can act accordingly and responsibly, and on the other, to generate employment ".

According to the councilman in charge of Beaches and Economic Promotion, Guillem Escolà, "Sitges is facing an atypical summer season but with prepared, top-quality and safe beaches". Escolà added that "as well as ensuring that all safety measures are followed, the team of workers will provide information on the municipal ordinance that prohibits the use of glass on the beaches, picnics or the presence of dogs, among other things, in order to ensure the conservation of our coastline in its perfect condition"

Maximum capacity control system

The team of information agents will also be in charge of covering the beaches and counting the people on each of them in order to determine the state of their volume.

The information agents will transfer this data directly to the new website platges.sitges.cat automatically, showing updated details of the volumes of each of the beaches. This information will also appear on the informational towers that will be installed at all the beaches, which will also contain all the information necessary to enjoy your leisure time on the coast in a responsible manner.

The Town Council asks citizens to share in this responsibility and stresses that it is important to check the volume and availability of the beaches before leaving home.

Color indicators to access beaches

The system will work by indicating the percentage of occupancy. In the event that it is high, between 60 and 80 percent, it is recommended to go to other beaches with a lower volume of people. Finally, if the permitted maximum capacity reaches 100%, this will mean that access to the beach will be prohibited in order to guarantee everyone's personal safety.

Safety measures

The Sitges Town Council would like to remind you that swimming and activities on the beaches are now permitted, but in compliance with the safety measures, in accordance with Order SND / 445/2020 of 26 May, amending Order SND / 271/2020 of 19 March, in Article 46, section 5, which allows municipal councils to establish access limitations and capacity control to ensure compliance with safety measures:

-A safety distance of 1.5 meters must be maintained between people.

- Individual sports are allowed, group sports are not recommended.
