The new Visitor Service Center located in the Can Milà farmhouse in Sitges, on one of the town's main access roads, opened its doors today, July 30, after a complete refurbishment of the premises. The Sitges Town Hall wants to offer a better experience for tourists, visitors and residents, and to be a driving force behind the promotion of a competitive, sustainable and inclusive tourism model. The Mayor of Sitges, Aurora Carbonell, remarked that "technology will play a very important role both for providing information externally and for collecting data for internal management. It is clear to us that a good place to visit must first be a good place to live, and the information we will obtain will help us to manage the destination even better".

The work to renovate Can Milà and its surroundings cost 593,608.77 euros, 50% of which was co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), and the remaining 50% by the Town Council and the Barcelona Provincial Council in equal parts. The president of the Regional Council, Mónica Gallardo, pointed out that "the new Sitges Visitor Service Center is part of the Garraf: roads, heritage and nature project, which brings together different initiatives from the different townships, related to the promotion and dissemination of Garraf in both the heritage and natural realms, with the aim of enhancing the experience for people visiting the region, promoting the creation of jobs and encouraging visits outside of tourist seasons. The project was born from the cooperation between the Garraf Regional Council and the region's town councils.”

The remodeling has taken 12 months, during which both the main house and the service building have been refurbished, as well as the landscaping of the garden and the installation of a parking lot for the general public. The Councilman for Tourism, Luís Miguel García, remarked that "the new Center will be technified and will be a logistic and informative place of reference. Internally, the data we will collect will allow us to segment and better understand the profile of each tourist and, therefore, to carefully plan the destination's management and promotion targeting our potential tourists. The data also provides information to improve the town for its residents themselves regarding issues such as cleanliness or safety, for example."

On the new space

The information area is located in Can Milà's main house, offering an interactive communication approach to promote knowledge and dissemination of both Sitges' and the entire region's cultural heritage, with attractive and dynamic content. The Sitges Tourism Department is located in the service building, in order to unite the Town Council's tourism services in the same space.

The design of the outdoor spaces has been worked on in collaboration with the Sitges Biodiversity organization. The planting of all the native species will be done starting in September, respecting their natural cycles. Nesting boxes for birds and insectaries will also be installed, as well as information panels with the definitions of the different species of flora and fauna in the environment.

Subsequently, in a second phase, the creation of a multi-space is being studied, designed for the creation and promotion of new technological actions applied to tourism, as well as a center for digital skills training. A butterfly garden will also be created in this second phase, a project that attracts lepidoptera based on specific flower species.
