The Department of Beaches restarts the cleaning service of the coast.

The Sitges City Council has begun to prepare the public services offered on the beaches for Easter and in the summer season. This is one of the most important assets of the town and one of the most outstanding economic sectors.

One of the main novelties is that the beaches of San Sebastián and La Fragata will be declared smoke-free spaces, so that smoking will only be allowed on the terraces of the beach bars and until the accesses to the beaches. The declaration of smoke-free beaches also prohibits the use of electronic cigarettes or vaporizers on these beaches, as of April 1, coinciding with the beginning of Easter, as established by the beach ordinance.

To accompany the smoke-free declaration on these two beaches, ashtrays have been installed at the accesses, as well as on the rest of the beaches from Riera Xica to Anquines, to give continuity and expand the action started last summer on the beaches. central.

The personnel of the rescue service and the beach inspector will be mainly in charge of ensuring compliance with the norm that prohibits smoking on these two beaches, although if a high degree of non-compliance is detected, the control will be extended with specific police reinforcement. Violations will be penalized following the regime established in the beach ordinance: smoking on beaches declared smoke-free is considered a minor infraction and the penalty applied for non-compliance is up to 300 euros.

Other services on the beaches of Sitges

The rescue service on the beaches comes into operation coinciding with Easter, from April 1, and will operate from 12 to 6 p.m. From May 1 to October 15, the service will be reactivated with an increase in staff and hours corresponding to the summer season.

The preparation of the beaches for Holy Week also includes the installation of 38 double stainless steel footbaths, with benches and support walkways, as well as 31 stainless steel showers, six of which are for people with reduced mobility, with wooden walkways , and public restrooms. Despite the installation of showers and footbaths, the service will be out of operation until the Generalitat de Catalunya deactivates the water saving restrictions due to the current drought situation.

The Department of Beaches will continue with the expansion of clean points to encourage maintenance on the beaches and prevent waste from ending up in the sea.

This 2023, starting in San Juan, when the high season officially begins, the beaches will operate with all activity services at 100%. This summer, the beaches of Sitges will offer the service of a total of 21 lots, which offer catering services, skates, massages, hammocks or awnings, among others.

Also with a view to the 2023 beach season, a children's area with a pyramid of ropes will be installed on La Fragata beach.

The Sitges City Council has extended the contract for the coastal cleaning service, which collects floating solid waste from the sea off the coast of Sitges.
