Sitges has passed the annual Biosphere Destination certification renewal audit and its next target is to achieve the next higher level with a Gold certification.
Upgrading Sitges to this category of acknowledgement implies that a certain number of companies will comply with the Biosphere commitment.
The audit that has allowed the certification to be renewed includes 112 objectives that are compulsory for the Biosphere standard. These include the instruments for a responsible tourism policy; the social and economic development of both the destination and the local community; conservation and improvement of the cultural heritage, and environmental conservation. Sitges has obtained favorable and satisfactory results in all of these parameters.
Biosphere Destination is a voluntary, independent certification system based on the principles of sustainability and continuous improvement. It is one of the most internationally acknowledged certifications and is positively regarded by tourists who choose Sitges to enjoy their holidays.
Promoted by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI), a non-profit organization, it was created with the support of UNESCO and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), and is based on the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDA) integrated into the 2030 agenda.
