Sitges is certified as a Biosphere Destination since 2016 and this validates the town's commitment to a sustainable and balanced development model from an economic, environmental, cultural and social perspective, which implies the need to work towards a process of continuous improvement to maintain and renew the certification each year. 

The Carrying Capacity Study was developed by the in2destination company and financed by the Diputació de Barcelona, its Provincial Council. A customized methodology has been developed to detect alerts and possible opportunities for regional improvement by studying 93 indicators divided into 5 areas such as governance, territorial, economic, social and environmental areas.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), as part of the One Planet initiative, has chosen Sitges as a destination committed to sustainability and highlights the Carrying Capacity Study as an initiative to move towards the comprehensive and sustainable management of Sitges as a tourist destination to continue improving its competitiveness, innovation, sustainability and inclusivity. The One Planet Sustainable Tourism Program aims to improve the sustainable development impacts of the tourism sector by 2030, through the development, promotion and upscaling of sustainable consumption and production processes that promote the efficient use of natural resources, producing less waste and addressing the challenges of climate change and biodiversity.

One Planet's vision for the responsible recovery of the tourism industry is based on the UNWTO's global guidelines and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to resume and revive a stronger and more sustainable tourism activity once the situation generated by Covid-19 has ended.
