The Sitges Town Council presents the first edition of the 'Sitges, Vila del Llibre' Literary Festival

The weekend of April 16, 17 and 18, the Sitges Passeig Marítim seafront promenade will be hosting the first edition of 'Sitges, Vila del Llibre' ("Sitges, City of Books"), one of the Sitges Town Council's commitments to cultural tourism.

The City of Books literary festival will be installing its independent publishers' market on Sitges' seafront promenade, and will be offering a lineup of presentations, debates, shows and exhibitions for all audiences focusing on the world of books and encouraging reading.
The Mayor of Sitges, Aurora Carbonell, explained that "this festival is being promoted for the purpose of highlighting Sitges' intense cultural activity and generating cross-sectional events that have a positive impact on the town's economic and social fabric, offering an enriching experience designed for residents, visitors and tourists". In this regard, Carbonell stressed the responsibility of public institutions in reactivating and revitalizing both cultural and tourism activity, key sectors for the country's economy.
Before describing the characteristics of the festival, the director of the City of Books Network of Catalonia, Enric Bono, wanted to highlight the Sitges Town Council's courage in "opening its arms to the publishing sector despite the pandemic scenario and offering an opportunity to rev up its engines a week before Saint George's Day, to kick off a campaign that is more than necessary for the sector". In this regard, and in terms of the pandemic, the Mayor stressed that "the festival is being designed in response to Procicat's recommendations and the project we are presenting today will be adapted to all the health safety conditions in force when the festival is being held."

Sitges Series

In line with the work being promoted by Turisme de Sitges, closely tied to sustainability and with the goal of highlighting the destination's identity and cultural legacy, Enric Bono stressed, while unveiling the festival's poster, that "City of Books doesn't aim to be an event that is alien to the identity of the territory that's hosting it, and that's why the evolution of Sitges over the last 100 years will have a very important and specific weight in the lineup.”

The curator of this year's Festival, the Sitgetan journalist and historian Jordi Barrachina, explained that "the backbone of the lineup will be the evolution of the city since the 1920s, starting with the construction of the promenade and Terramar and the confluence of various elements that appeared at that time, like its avant-garde movements, its rationalist architecture or festive Sitges... that laid the foundations for Sitges' present-day identity.”
Sitges, City of Books will open on the evening of Friday April 16th with an institutional event that will be followed by a debate entitled "Daring Sitges. From the Yellow Manifesto to La Cubana" that, in Barrachina's words, "will take a look at the town's cultural evolution during the 20th century and the different manifestations that have appeared over the last hundred years to shape Sitges as we know it today.”

Over the course of the weekend, the round tables on Sitges will be interspersed with presentations of the latest literary releases, award-winning authors from this past year and a series of alternative activities such as poetry recitals, children's activities and exhibitions for all audiences that will take place on the seafront promenade and in surrounding establishments such as the halls of the Hotel ME Sitges Terramar, the event's sponsor.
