The town of Sitges has been acknowledged with the 'Best Sustainable Destination' Award presented by the Asociación Catalana de Periodistas y Escritores de Economía y Turismo 'Red de Periodistas de Turismo' ('Tourism Journalists Network', the Catalan Association of Economy and Tourism Journalists and Writers), during the 24th Tourism Night held this Thursday in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat. The acting mayor of Sitges, Miquel Forns, was in charge of collecting the award from Domènec Biosca, president of ACPETUR.
Forns explained that "for decades now, tourism has been the main driving force behind Sitges’ economy. It has been, precisely, thanks to the activity of this sector that our town has achieved the international recognition and prestige that has received". For the Mayor, this behavior explains that "during his term of office, Sitges has been honored with the Biosphere Destination certification".
Forns declared that "tourism development must be in harmony with both the natural and human environment. And that's the only way we all come out winners and the only way to add further appeal for tourists and visitors." "Now we find ourselves at another level, a level that leads us to highlight a heritage that must be left in the best conditions for future generations", added Miquel Forns.
Over the course of the evening, other prizes were awarded to initiatives such as the transformation of a hotel in Madrid into a benchmark luxury hotel and initiatives of architectural and technological innovation.
The event has acknowledged the commitment to 360º information and initiatives with positive, possibilist and proactive values, also from the hotel sector. Prizes have were awarded for the reconversion of historic buildings and others from the air transport sector.
