Sitges' candidacy emphasizes two tourism assets to promote industrial tourism in town: the Malvasia Interpretation Center and the La Sitgetana Craft Beer Brewery. These two local assets, both deeply rooted in the territory, are the main focuses of the Department of Tourism’s proposal to expand tourism and cultural activities and to boost diversification, deseasonalization, and also increase tourist spending.
Sitges’ membership, approved on Wednesday by the Local Government Board, gives the go-ahead to become part of the XATIC (Industrial Tourism Network of Catalonia), an association created in 2006 with its headquarters in Terrassa and which brings together more than 41 different towns with the goal of promoting one of the country’s important and varied industrial legacies. This industrial tourism’s supply includes facilities such as museums, interpretation centers, old factories or mines throughout the Catalan territory.
The Malvasia Interpretation Center (CIM), opened in April 2019, publicizes and preserves a top quality product from this sweet wine. This venue allows tours of the winery, the vineyard and the interior of the CIM and offers museum resources installed in the Corral de la Vila to vindicate Malvasia wine.
Since 2014, La Sitgetana Craft Beer produces a beer with natural ingredients and traditional methods, while working with local products. The owners of La Sitgetana are members of the XATIC and allow tours of their facilities to get to know the manufacturing processes of their products in person in order to promote the living industry.
