9 blue flags accredit Sitges as Catalan leader in beaches

Sitges received the highest quality distinction at a ceremony in Torredembarra.

The nine blue flags awarded to nine beaches in Sitges accredit the town as the leading Catalan municipality in these distinctions. These nine awards represent the renewal of those obtained in the previous season. Specifically, the beaches where the blue flag will be flying are Les Botigues, Garraf, Aiguadolç, Balmins, Sant Sebastià, La Ribera, L'Estanyol, La Barra and Terramar. In addition, the beaches of Sitges have also been awarded the Biosphere certification and two marinas in Sitges have also been awarded the blue flag: Port Ginesta and Port de Garraf.

The distinction, awarded to nine of the twenty urban beaches in the municipality, rewards sustainability, water quality, safety, attention to people with functional diversity and the complementary or educational offer that takes place in these areas. The lifeguard service on Sitges beaches has earned this top award, as well as access to the beaches for people with reduced mobility and services for this group, from being able to bathe in an amphibious chair to having a shaded area.

This year, Catalonia has 96 award-winning beaches (two more than last year) and 24 ports (one more) with the Blue Flag, which internationally recognises quality and services. In terms of beaches, 28 are in the Girona area, 33 in Barcelona, 26 in Tarragona and 9 in Terres de l'Ebre. As for ports, there are 10 in the Girona area, 7 in Barcelona and 7 more in Tarragona and Terres de l'Ebre. The Blue Flag award is granted by the International Blue Flag 2022 Jury of the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education).
