Since this summer, Sitges has the first two smoke-free beaches. On the beaches of San Sebastián and La Fragata, smoking is only allowed on the terraces of the beach bars and up to the beach accesses. The use of electronic cigarettes or vaporisers is also prohibited on these two beaches.

The measure, which was implemented to coincide with Easter, is included in the beach ordinance. To accompany the smoke-free declaration in these two areas, ashtrays have been installed at the entrances, as will also be done on the rest of the beaches.

This measure is in addition to the actions planned by the City Council to maintain the beaches and the natural environment in the best conditions, while promoting healthy habits. With regard to the area, the councils of Beach Maintenance and Services, Environmental Action and Ecological Transition, Image and Public Roads, and Projects and Works, have met to coordinate a work plan that includes actions to improve the state of the sand.

The Town Council has earmarked a budget of 2.4 million euros for Sitges beaches in 2023.

Other services on the beaches of Sitges
The lifeguard service is staffed by 2 coordinators and 29 lifeguards during the high season and operates from 10 am to 7 pm.

The beaches with lifeguards are Les Botigues de Sitges, Cala Ginesta, Garraf, Cala Morisca, Aiguadolç, Balmins, San Sebastián, Fragata, Ribera, Bassa Rodona, Estanyol, Riera Xica, La Barra, Terramar and Anquines.

The beaches have benches and support walkways, 38 double stainless steel footbaths, and 31 stainless steel showers, six of which are for people with reduced mobility, with wooden walkways, and public toilets. Both the footbaths and showers are currently out of operation until the Generalitat de Catalunya deactivates the water saving restrictions due to the current drought situation.

The different services are included in the Uses Plan 2023, authorised by the Coastal Service of the Generalitat. This summer, Sitges beaches offer a restaurant service, skates, massages, sun loungers and awnings, among others.

Also new this season, the brigades and drivers of tractors and beach machinery are part of the municipal staff as seasonal structural personnel; until now, they came from employment plans that were promoted each season.

This season La Fragata has a new children's area with a rope pyramid.

Sea waste cleaning service
Sitges has a coastal cleaning service, which collects floating solid waste from the sea off the coast of Sitges. The boat in charge of the service is equipped with low-consumption ecological engines and works from mid-June to mid-September along the 37.4 kilometres of coastline, six days a week. In summer 2022, the service collected 718 kg of waste, 72% of which was plastic.
