Sitges beaches are implementing an extensive first-aid service and improvements in accessibility

The first-aid service at Sitges beaches will begin on 18 May and be fully operative by Sant Joan, with a new lifeguarding model, inclusive services and measures to boost users’ safety, accessibility and well-being

The lifeguarding and first-aid service will be activated on Sitges beaches starting Monday 18 May. During this month, the service will be offered from 12 noon to 6 pm on La Fragata, La Ribera and Bassa Rodona beaches, and it will gradually expand in times and beaches until it is fully implemented by Sant Joan, dovetailing with the official start of the season.

The councillor for Natural Spaces, Carme Gasulla, stresses that ‘beach safety is a top priority for the municipal government. Every year we work to boost human and material resources, improve accessibility and further our prevention efforts to ensure that Sitges continues to offer safe, inclusive beaches that are ready to respond to any incident with the utmost efficacy.’

In the mid-season, the months of June and September, the lifeguards will be working from 10 am to 6 pm, and in high season (July and August), the service will operate from 10 am to 7 pm. The services will reach their peak with a team made up of thirty lifeguards, two supervisors and one coordinator, who will strive to keep watch over the safety of users of Les Botigues, Cala Ginesta, Garraf, Cala Morisca, Aiguadolç, Balmins, Sant Sebastià, Fragata, Ribera, Bassa Rodona, Estanyol, Riera Xica, La Barra, Terramar and Anquines beaches.

Plus, the city also has SOS emergency points on Cala Gegants (Desenrocada beach), Home Mort, Vallcarca, Cala Morisca and Cala Ginesta beaches, which have no lifeguards or a reduced lifeguard calendar. The SOS points are safety devices that allow users to send rapid alerts to the emergency services in case of accidents, drowning or any severe incident.

Likewise, the lifeguard module located on the jetty between La Ribera and Bassa Rodona beaches has been renovated. The new space has a specific first-aid zone, a rest and work area and a storage room where floating beach wheelchairs and other equipment can be stored, which considerably improves the conditions under which the service is provided.

Accessibility is one of the priorities of the beach safety measures, which is why the assisted bathing service is offered to people with reduced mobility or functional diversity. This service is available during high season at Les Botigues, Garraf, Aiguadolç, Balmins, Sant Sebastià, Ribera, Estanyol, La Barra and Terramar beaches. There is no need to book it in advance; simply approach the lifeguards and request it when wanting to swim, as long as they are available at that time. There is also a free ID bracelet service for children, a useful tool to help rapid responses if they are lost or become disoriented.

City Council is also continuing to roll out preventive measures associated with public health. New shade pergolas have been installed on La Fragata and Anquines beaches. The purpose of these structures that are free for public use is to protect users from the risks associated with sun exposure, especially more vulnerable people like babies and senior citizens.

Figure on the first-aid and lifeguard service 2025

Last year, the prevention, lifeguarding and first-aid service recorded 57,982 preventive actions, 8% more than in 2024, over the 129 days of continuous service between 6 June and 12 October.

During this period, 1,974 people were served, 17% fewer than in 2024, primarily thanks to the drop in minor assistance needed and especially incidents related to jellyfish stings. Rescues also dropped from 102 to 67, and there was a significant increase in assisted bathing to 108 people assisted, almost four times than the previous season.

One of the most important indicators is that not a single death due to drowning was recorded during the service period, which reveals the efficacy of the preventive measures rolled out and solidifies Sitges as a benchmark in coastal safety and quality.
