Guided tour: The Role of Cau Ferrat. The Unseen Museum.
A behind-the-scenes look to discover how the heritage of Cau Ferrat is protected.
Cau Ferrat, Santiago Rusiñol’s former home and studio, preserves not only his collection but also the original atmosphere of a historic residence conceived as a total work of art. This uniqueness poses significant conservation challenges, particularly regarding the works on paper—a key collection for understanding Catalan Modernism and Rusiñol himself.
“Paper is a material that is particularly sensitive to factors such as light, humidity, or the passage of time, which can cause its degradation and make it more fragile. To ensure the preservation of the originals while maintaining the overall vision of Cau Ferrat, a process has begun to replace the displayed works on paper with facsimiles.”
This tour of Santiago Rusiñol’s drawing collection, led by its conservators, will grant access to the reserve storage area where the originals are kept under proper conditions, offering a first-hand look at how the professionals responsible for the documentation, conservation, and restoration of the collections work.
