A wine that is only produced in Sitges
We have our own wine. Like no other in the world. Its name comes from the variety of grape with which it is made: Malvasia.
Its particular taste is not only determined by the variety of grape, but also by the late grape harvest, the high standard, the acidity and obviously, its proximity to the sea.
The result is a golden wine, dominated by fresh fruit (peach, apricot, pear and melon), with floral hints and a touch of Mediterranean herbs.
Centro de Interpretación de la Malvasia de Sitges
The winery that has preserved the legacy
The Malvasia de Sitges Interpretation Centre (CIM), located in the former Corral de la Vila, an eighteenth-century livestock building, is a key space for understanding the preserving the history of a unique wine: Malvasia de Sitges. For decades, this variety, which is unique to Sitges, was crafted into wine in the winery of the Hospital Sant Joan Baptista.
With the arrival of phylloxera and the rise of champagne in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, Malvasia de Sitges started to decline. Forecasting its disappearance, the Sitges-born diplomat Manuel Llopis i de Casades (1885-1935) decided to preserve this heritage. Before dying, he bequeathed the family vineyard in Aiguadolç and the Malvasia winemaking business to the Hospital Sant Joan Baptista.
Today, you can enjoy a unique wine tourism experience at the CIM: choose from the different guided tours, learn about the role Malvasia has played in the history and identity of Sitges, visit an exceptional urban winery and savour different kinds of Malvasia wines from both the Hospital winery and other Catalan and international wineries at the La Malvaseria bar.
Learn how Malvasia de Sitges is much more than a sweet wine: it's living culture, tradition and landscape.
