Waste collection on the beaches of Sitges

Collection of marine waste on the beaches of La Barra and Terramar in Sitges organized with the collaboration of Custòdia de platges. We will publicize the citizen science projects of Observadors del Mar where we can share data and observations about the type and amount of waste, plastics and microplastics that we find on the beaches of our coast.

The presence of waste and polluting products on beaches, seas and oceans is presented as one of the most important challenges for the sustainability of increasingly fragile ecosystems with a loss of biodiversity and alarming transformation.

Plastics and microplastics constitute one of the points of this problem since they encompass all coastal and marine ecosystems, affecting a large part of the species that live there.

It is estimated that by 2050 the amount of plastic in the sea may be greater than the amount of fish. A good example of this problem is the existence of large floating islands of marine debris and plastics that, due to the influence of currents, are concentrated in certain maritime areas of the Pacific and Indian Ocean.

The passage of time and the erosion produced by waves and the sun fragment plastic waste into microplastics that become part of the food chain of marine species, causing serious damage to their survival.
